Saturday, October 31, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Stacey, Russ and Jim

Weather: Mid 50's and rain

Comments: We ran to Council Crest and back for 10 miles. Stacey took a tumble and was not happy with the condition of the trail. We'll have to get someone to remove all the leaves. Maybe the Ivy Removers can work on it.

Saturday, October 24, 2009

Our next run will be one week from today unless I break a rib or get the flu.

Friday, October 2, 2009

Our next run will be one week from tomorrow.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Russ, and Jim

Weather: Upper 50's and sunny

Comments: We ran Wildwood to Council Crest and then went around Fairmont Loop taking the shortcut back for 11+ miles. Fairmont Loop is good mental training for those us who are weak in the art of road running.

Friday, September 25, 2009

The next run will be Saturday mroning at 7:00 AM. Park off Burnside.

Saturday, September 19, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn and Jim

Weather: 60 degrees and misty

Comments: Ran the Wildwood, downtown, Marquam Trail loop taking the shortcut back for 9 miles. I'll take a little bit of rain rather than heat any day. No babies to report on.

Friday, September 18, 2009

Our next run will be along the Wildwood. Park off Burnside at 7:00 AM.

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Runners: Caroly, Stacey, Russ, and Jim

Weather: 60 and Sunny

Comments: We went to Council Crest and back for a nice 10 mile trail run. Lots of runners and hikers today. The plan for next week is to run 12 miles without feeling like we added 2 to today's 10. And just for the record this week the previously ugly baby was cute.

Friday, September 11, 2009

Our next run will be on the Wildwood starting at 7:30. Park off Burnside.

Saturday, September 5, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn, Stacey and Jim

Saturday, August 22, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn, Stacey, Jessica and Jim

Weather: 60 and Sunny

Comments: Good run today but after hiking, lifting, biking, tennis, racquetball and swimming this week Marquam hill seemed a bit steeper than usual.

Friday, August 21, 2009

Our next run will be Saturday at 7:00 AM. Park off Burnside.

Saturday, August 15, 2009

Runners: Stacey, Carolyn, Jim

Weather: Upper 50's and clear

Comments: Nice run along the Wildwood to Council Crest and back.

Friday, August 14, 2009

Our next run will be Saturday at 7:30 AM. Park off Burnside.

Friday, July 24, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn, Jessica, Sarah, Danny and Jim

Weather: Upper 50's Cloudy

Comments: We started on the Wildwood and headed down through Washington Park. We went up the Stairs and past the Castle. We split off into two groups at Broadway and met back up at Peet's Coffee. Everybody ran about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Great job college students!

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Runners: Danny and Jim

Weather: Low 50's and sunny

Comments: Danny ran his first 1/2 in 1:35:45! He was second in his age category and top 10 overall. Unfortunately they only awarded the winner in each age category ( Danny did beat everybody from 25-34.) That's okay they recognized all the runners 18 and younger... sorry Dan, you 19 year-old running wonder. I was happy with my run at 1:57:56. Call me Mr 9:00. In terms of steady splits that was my best race by a mile. The first mile was 8:40 and the last mile was 9:20 and all the rest were 9:00. Some day I'll get that negative split.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

The next run will be Thursday morning at 7:00 at the Hawthonre Bridge.

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Runner: Carolyn, Stacey, Russ and Jim.

Comments: Had little mix up on the time this morning (sorry sis.) We all ran around 2 hours.
Our next run is today at 7:00. Park off Burnside.

Friday, July 3, 2009

Runners / Hikers: Dave, Stacey Carolyn, Brian and Jim

Weather: 60's and sunny

Comments: We hiked up past Multnomah Falls, up to Devils Rest Lookout for the the top of the hike / run at 2400 feet elevation. We had to backtrack 1.6 miles and then made a loop by going down the Wahkeena Falls trail and then back the bottom. I had a little slip by one of the waterfalls to make life interesting. I know that you are always suppose to keep three points in contact but I don't think face, shoulder and hip count. The hike was 9.5 miles and it took us a little over 3 hours.

Friday, June 26, 2009

Runners: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Low 50's and sunny

Comments: Parked at Marquam Shelter and went up to Council Crest. Over to the zoo and down Wildwood. We went down through Washington Park and back over to Marquam Shelter.

Our next run will be from the Marquam Shelter at 6:30 Friday morning.

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Weather: Upper 50's and cloudy

Comments: Parked at Marquam Shelter and ran towards PSU. Connected with Vista bridge and into Washington Park. Connected with Wildwood trail and over to Council Crest and then down the Marquam trail.

Friday, June 12, 2009

Meet at Marquam Shelter at 7:00 AM.

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Runners: Russ and Jim

Weather: 50's and cloudy

Comments: We ran a new route today. We went flat and then up. We continued to go up and then flat and then up again. (Notice we have not gone down yet.) Then we went down to the car. The run was about 9 miles and took 1:40.

The next run will be on the Wildwood starting 7:00 AM. Park on the road to Pittock.

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Brian, and Jim

Weather: 50 and partly cloudy

Comments: We ran from Wildwood down into Portland and over to Marquam trail. We took the shortcut back for an 11 miler. I can really tell that I have been off for awhile.

Friday, May 15, 2009

Run is cancelled for tommorrow, May 16th.

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Stephen, and Jim

Weather: Upper 40's and clear

Comments: Stephen T joined us today and we were able to slow him down bit from his regular pace ( and I think he sped us up a bit.) We ran the same course as two weeks ago but did not take the short cut back. It took a little over 2 hours. Next week, shorter faster.

Friday, May 8, 2009

The next run will be on the Wildwood Trail at 7:00 AM Saturday morning. Park on the road towards Pittock Mansion.

Saturday, May 2, 2009

Runners: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Low 50's and misty

Comments: We ran from the Hawthorne Bridge to Terwilliger going nearly to Barbur (about 5 miles) and back. On the way back we took a detour down to track and Dunaway. We clocked one lap to find our pace 1.5 hours into the run. I ran a bit fast at 8:10 and Carolyn ran a more reasonable (for 1/2 marathon) pace of 8:20. We should be able to manage 8:23 for Helvetia. On the way back through downtown we had an encounter with a homeless guy that was startling. Lots of yelling and screaming. Then there was Coopers. Was it my discomfort with his revealing spandex that made that man sit so close to me? Deep Thoughts.

Friday, May 1, 2009

Our next run will be Saturday morning at 7:00 AM. Park at Hawthorne bridge for a run up Terwilliger.

Saturday, April 25, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn and Jim

Weather: 45 and cloudy

Comments: We ran from Wildwood down through Washington Park over to Marquam Shelter and back using the shortcut. We kept a very comfortable pace. Next week the plan is to run Terwilliger at a faster pace.

Friday, April 24, 2009

Our next run will be at 7:00 AM. Park on the road to Pittock.

Saturday, April 18, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn and Jim plus about 15 other runners at the Tiicum 10K.

Weather: Perfect - 50 and sunny

Comments: Nice flat run at Champeog Park. We should organize our own 10k there sometime and see if we can get more runners. All we need is a cause. Better yet we could have an anti-theme 10k. Russ - let's play a little game called 'where did I leave my running shoes?" You go first.

Friday, April 17, 2009

We will meet at Carolyn;s house at 9:00 AM and drive over to Champoeg Park for the Tilicum 10k. Russ - I can meet you in the Joes parking lot in Sherwood at 8:50. Another option is for me to pick you up at about 8:30 at your house ( 13th? between which streets?) Leave a message or call me.

Saturday, April 11, 2009

Runners: Russ, Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Upper 40's to start and lower 40's to finish

Comments: Ran Wildwood to Council Crest, along the top to the tower, took a right on Fairmont loop and then the short cut back. I was shooting for a 2 hour run and we came in at 1:59:00. Carolyn put her foot down and made us go slower at the beginning which made for a good finish.

Friday, April 10, 2009

The next run will be Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. Park on the road to Pittock Mansion.

Saturday, April 4, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Russ and Jim

Weather: Mid 30's and Sunny

Comments: Nice weather after a long cold winter. Although it was muddy it was great to hit the trail. The plan for Helvetia Half training is to alternate long hilly trail runs (good) with shorter faster flat runs (bad.) I was going to skip the next 10k (Tilicum 10k) on the list but now I am thinking that would be perfect for a fast run in two weeks.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Brian, Jessica, Russ and Jim - We all ran the Shamrock Run.

Weather: Low 40's, rainy and windy (miserable)

Comments: It was fun to run a shorter run (sorry Russ) and not feel totally exhausted afterwards. Bridges Cafe hit the spot too (again, sorry Russ.)

Saturday, March 7, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Brian, Jim

Weather: Upper 30's, windy, light rain

Comments: The run started out very windy and cold across the Hawthorne bridge. We ran up Marquam trail to Council Crest. Took Fairmont back to Marquam and back for 9 miles. The conditions seemed much nicer the second time across the bridge.

Saturday, February 28, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Russ and Jim

Weather: Low 40's and windy

Comments: We ran the same course as three weeks ago - 3 minutes faster. The next step will be add two miles by running the Wildwood trail all the way back.

Our next run will be Saturday at 7:30 AM. Park off Burnside towards Pittock Mansion.

Saturday, February 21, 2009

Friday, February 20, 2009

The next run will be Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. Park by Coopers next to the Hawthorne Bridge.

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Runner: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Low 30's and snow flurries

Comments: We ran from Hawthorne Bridge to Marquam Shelter and then up to Council Crest. On the way down we took Fairmont Loop and ended up on Marquam Trail. It was a nice 9 miles run at a slow pace. Russ - what route did you end up running?

Friday, February 13, 2009

The next run will start at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge. Park by Coopers Coffee at 7:30 AM.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Brian, Russ and Jim

Weather: Low 40's and clear

Comments: We started on the Wildwood trail and then went down through Washington Park managing to stay west of 405 and went under 26 on 18th st putting us at the base of Broadway hill (Russ was begging to run up it - patience Russ, we will run up that hill.) We did run up Marquam Shelter hill to the top of Council Crest and then took the shorcut back for 11 miles. Hats off to Brian for hanging in there on a challenging run.

Friday, February 6, 2009

UPDATE - WE ARE GOING TO START AT 7:30 - Russ, I hope you get this!

Our next run will be Saturday, February 7th at 7:00 AM. We will park off Burnside.

Friday, January 30, 2009

Our next run will be Saturday at 7:30. Park on the street past Wildwood trail off Burnside.

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Runner: Carolyn, Russ, and Jim

Weather: Low 30's and cloudy

Comments: We ran Wildwood to Council Crest and back. It has been 2 months since we ran 10 miles. We will have to get a few more 10 milers in before increasing.

Friday, January 23, 2009

Our next run will be Saturday at 7:30. Same parking at last week.

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Russ, and Jim

Weather: Low 30's and clear

Comments: It was nice to get back on the Wildwood trail. The ground was frozen on much of the trail. At the top of Council Crest is was a bit warmer ...okay it was freezing with 30-40 mph winds making the windchill in the teens.

Friday, January 16, 2009

The next run will be Saturday at 7:30. Park near the Pittock Mansion entrance road.

Saturday, January 10, 2009

Runners: Carolyn, Stacy, Russ, and Jim

Weather: Low 30's and foggy

Comments: We ran from Marquam Shelter to Council Crest and then down to Terwilliger and back. It was nice to have Russ and Stacy back on the trails. Now we need to get back to Peets...

Friday, January 9, 2009

The next run will be Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. Park at the Marquam shelter.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

Run canceled due to poor driving conditions. We will run early next week to test our my new headlight.

Saturday, January 3, 2009

The next run will be Sunday at 6:45. Park at Marquam Shelter.

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Runners: Carolyn, Brian, Jessica and Jim.

Weather: 40's and cloudy

Comments: We ran from Marquam Shelter to Coucil Crest. We were running on packed snow near the top. We ran down to Terwilliger and back to the car.

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

Our next run will be Wednesday at 9:00 AM. Meet at the Marquam Shelter.

Saturday, December 27, 2008

Runners: Jim

Weather: 40 degrees and raining

Comments: Thank goodness for Yaks Traks (chains for my shoes) . I was on ice and snow 90 percent of the run. I ran up Marquam trail to Council Crest. Next I ran along Fairmont Loop until I had to take a detour due to a large tree that fell across the road. I worked my way back up to Council Crest road and then back down Mcdonnell (that was closed to cars due to steepness and large snow drifts) where I got back to Farimont Loop. Then I ran down to Marquam trail, took a left towards Marquam Shelter and made my way back. This took 1:24 and was about 6 miles. Slipping around requires extra energy for balance and result in a tough workout. I seem to get my "snow legs" after about 45 minutes.

Friday, December 26, 2008

The next run will be from the Marquam Shelter on Saturday at 7:30 AM.

Saturday, December 20, 2008

Update - I went for a run from my house to Glendoveer, around the golf course and back. It was 26 degrees when I left and 24 degrees when I got back. Wind gust of 30 MPH made for an adventure. When the wind was to my back I had to take my gloves off due to over-heating.

The morning run has been cancelled due to poor driving conditions - the snowstorm came early. Everybody do your own run and post here under comments. Have fun in the snow!

Friday, December 19, 2008

Next run is Saturday, December 20th at 7:30. We will park at Hawthorne Bridge.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Next run will be at Marquam Shelter at 730 AM.

Saturday, December 6, 2008

Runners: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Low 30's and clear

Comments: Started at Marquam shelter and ran to Council Crest. We decided to run over to Terwilliger and back for a total of 1 hour and 7 minutes. I thought of a good challenge run - Do this exact run except turn around when we hit Terwilliger and run back the same way we came. It would take about 1 hour 50.

Friday, December 5, 2008

Our next run will be at 7:30 AM at the Marquam shelter Saturday morning.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Breaking News - I have a new PR. I must have started my watch a little early or stopped it a bit late. Below is my old PR from the 2006 Helvetia Half Marathon:

Lofthus, Jim Portland, OR 2010 M 42 1:57:42

Here is my time from the 2008 Eugene Run to Stay Warm:

17 Jim Lofthus 44 M 40-44 M R Portland OR 1:57:41.8

I beat the old record by 1/5 of a second!

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Runners: Hundreds

Weather: 40 degrees and partly cloudy / foggy

Comments: We (Brian, Carolyn and I) ran the Run to Stay Warm in Eugene. Brian crushed his PR by running a 1:56:30 and I missed my PR by 4 seconds with a 1:57:46. Carolyn stuck to her game plan and took it easy coming in right around 2 hours. Feel free to add comments and tell us how you did if you ran the Run to Stay Warm.

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Runners: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Perfect

Comments: We parked at Marquam Shelter again. A lady tried to recruit us for a work party after the run. I'll take that over a smashed window. We ran up to Council Crest, over to Wildwood and stopped above the zoo. We had a very clear view of Mr Rainer. Turned around and came back for a total of 9 miles. Russ - everyone at Cooper's was looking for you.

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Runners: Carolyn and Jim

Weather: Upper 50's and some rain

Comments: We started at Marquam Shelter which requires a 1.5 mile climb right out of the car. We ran the Wildwood towards Burnside until we reached the road that leads down to Washington Park. Ended up on Canyon Rd and ran down to Hawthorned Bridge, crossed and ran past OMSI and then turned around and went the shorted route back to Maarquam Shelter. It was a nice run that has trails, hills, flat, road and very little traffic.

Our next run will be Saturday. We will park under the Hawthorne Bridge at 7:00 AM.

Saturday, October 4, 2008
